Week reviews of the leadership roundtable!

Week 1:

For this experience, I am really hoping to understand more about student leaders, and specifically the student leaders of other organizations on campus. I am very interested in how other organizations are keeping their members engaged and completing events throughout the year. I also want to get better at talking to others and not being afraid to explain how involved I am and why. I am excited to be with a group of people who are also in love with being involved and helping others! This experience can help me academically by assisting me to learn more about my organizational style, and allow me to get better at the strengths I already possess! I am just excited in general to talk about leadership and the different ways others find success in the world of leading in UC!

Week 2:

This week, I heard a presentation about some ways to build engaging meetings and how to keep members engaged during said meetings. This semester, I plan on trying more of the different icebreakers explained in the presentation this week. Icebreakers that make people talk to each other will work best in the clubs I'm a part of. This is because then people can get to know more about each other’s past and the different ways they’ve gotten involved in their major of criminal justice. This is good for everyone as we will learn more about each other AND learn potential new ways to get involved in our majors!

Week 3:

My elevator pitch: "Hi! I'm Summer and I’m a 3rd year majoring in Criminal Justice and Psychology with a Spanish minor and a certificate in Crime and Intelligence Analysis! I am very interested in investigating and helping to solve crimes and people at a federal level. I would love to learn more about how your federal agency works and your favorite memory with them!"

I want to practice my pitch in front of my friends to make it sound more like a friendly statement.

I hope to bring emotional intelligence into my leadership teams by leading by example. I will do this by not holding back how I feel as a leader, and showing that success comes from working hard and letting other leaders know that sometimes you need a break.

Week 4:

I think that leadership transitions can be very easy if the transition is done with the new successor in mind. I think to make the transition easier, one should keep a living document and collect all the resources they have used, important contacts, tips, etc. This will be important as the successor will have access to a plethora of knowledge and they will not have to start at the very bottom. This also would make the process of being in an executive position easier as all information you know is saved in one place for easy recognition. I think the living document is a simple but an easy shot at ensuring the work the done for the past leadership role does not get lost in the future.

Week 5:

Intersectionality influences DEI in our organizations by allowing people to understand multiple different perspectives and help to use their connectivity to better relate to issues, people, ideas, etc. in an organization. To foster inclusivity and embrace diversity in an organization the individuals in the organization should be open-minded and excited to learn about others. However, that is not always the case for people, so a good strategy to ensure everyone feels included can be the executive board leading by example. Leading by example can help show how to embrace diversity and enhance inclusion but also teach those who don't know what to do some positive ways to ensure DEI is being upheld.

Week 6:

Using my positions in my organizations to work collaboratively with the community is good for a lot of people and places. For me, I learn more about others, have access to resources I did not even know existed, and get to help others around me. Working and establishing connections among other communities and/or organizations brings together more people and builds an even better community! I love planning events, working with a lot of other people, and helping people, and collaborating with others only benefits this!
